What Does Success Look Like in the Face of Wildfire?

The 2024 fire season is shaping up to be a challenging one. With the number of fire starts and acres burned already reminiscent of the intense seasons we saw in 2015 and 2018, it’s clear that this year will not be as quiet as the last two. While there is still much to learn about what makes a fire season particularly active, we have made significant strides in mitigating the impacts of wildfires once they begin. We've come a long way since the days of the Rim Fire in 2013 and the Valley Fire in 2015, with a focus on preventing these devastating megafires from gaining a foothold in the first place.

As we brace for what will likely be a busy fire season, it’s important to reflect on our achievements in building a fire-resilient landscape and redefine what “success” truly means.

Pest Alert!

Mediterranean Oak Borer

Find out More

Unfortunately, Lake County and surrounding areas are facing a new potential threat: the Mediterranean Oak Borer. This beetle poses a significant risk to our Valley and Blue Oak trees. Its distribution within Napa, Sonoma, and Lake Counties is not yet well understood, so CLERC is closely monitoring suspect trees.

We are working with the Tree Mortality Task Force which is a subcommittee of the Risk Reduction Authority (RRA). A reporting system has been developed that will allow community members to report trees that may be affected. If you think you see an infected tree you can report it Here!

CLERC's Team Member Updates

We're thrilled to introduce the latest addition to our CLERC team. We would like to introduce Laura McAndrews Sammel as our new Operation Director and Hannah Shapiro as our new Biological Technician. We are very excited to welcome both to our team!

Understanding Fire Pathways with Technology

When faced with the non-renewal of his home insurance, Will Evans, executive director of CLERC, discovered XyloPlan, a tech startup that uses AI to map and predict wildfire risks. CLERC, with its extensive experience in wildfire resilience, recognizes the urgent need for proactive prevention, especially as housing continues to encroach on forested areas. However, insurance companies often struggle to account for wildfire mitigation efforts when assessing risk. Through a pilot project with XyloPlan, partially funded by Pacific Gas & Electric, CLERC aims to make data-driven fire prevention a permanent part of their strategy. The ultimate goal is to use this innovative technology to help communities with effective wildfire mitigation retain or secure home insurance, ensuring that their reduced risk is accurately reflected in policy management.
